A Singapore Malaysia border crossing is usually decided the night before — not at the booth. Most people start with the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. That is the right first search, but it is only one form.
Woodlands (the Causeway) and Tuas (the Second Link) also expect a passport Malaysia will accept, a plan for the SG Arrival Card on the way home, and the MyICA QR ICA is asking travellers to show that month.

Every child needs a passport
A birth certificate is not enough. Keep every passport in the same pouch.
It is not a visa-application walkthrough, a VEP driving manual, or a “which hour is fastest” article. The main line is people and papers.
Passport & visa basics
Passport validity Malaysia is the first filter. Malaysian immigration commonly expects a passport valid for at least six months from the date you enter. Each traveller needs their own passport, including infants.
What to put in the passport pouch
The legal text sits with Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia — verify on the official Immigresen site before you travel, especially if a passport expires in five to seven months and you are tempted to “just go JB for lunch.”

Visa rules are nationality-specific. Many Singapore passport holders enter Malaysia for a short social visit without applying in advance. That is not a promise of how many days you will be stamped, and it does not cover every passport in a mixed family. Confirm exemption and permitted stay with Immigresen or the Malaysian High Commission before you travel.
Replace a damaged or unscannable passport in Singapore first.

Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) — who files it from Singapore
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is Malaysia’s electronic arrival declaration — the current Malaysia arrival card, not a paper slip on the bus. People search mdac singapore because the rule is not the same for every person leaving Woodlands or Tuas.
Singapore citizens
If you enter as a Singapore citizen on a Singapore passport, you usually do not file. Exemptions are set by Immigresen, not by a blog.
PR / work pass, foreign passport
PR or an MOM pass is a Singapore status. Malaysia reads the passport you present.
Who files, where to submit, and what to keep offline
Singapore citizens are generally exempt from MDAC. Verify on the official site before you travel.
MDAC for Singapore PR / work pass holders is different. If that passport is not Singapore or Malaysian, you should usually still complete MDAC. Typical case: an Employment Pass holder with an Indian, Filipino, or British passport lives in Tampines, day-trips to JB, and still needs the Malaysia arrival card. The Singapore citizen in the next seat typically does not.
Foreign visitors who are only in Singapore on a short-term visit, then continue to Malaysia by land, should assume MDAC applies unless the official form says otherwise.
Where to submit (official only)
Use the Immigresen MDAC portal: https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main
If that URL fails to load, search Malaysia Digital Arrival Card official and open a page on imi.gov.my. Do not pay a random “MDAC agent” site.
This guide does not invent a filing window in hours. Those details belong on the official page. File before arrival, keep the confirmation or QR where you can open it without hotel Wi-Fi, and take a screenshot. One required traveller, one submission. A spouse on a different passport needs their own card.
If the entry date or Malaysian address changes, use the official portal to update or resubmit.
Singapore Arrival Card (coming home)
The SG Arrival Card is ICA’s electronic arrival / health declaration for entering Singapore. On a SG Arrival Card Malaysia trip, the mistake is treating the JB leg and the return as the same form. MDAC is Malaysia. SGAC is Singapore.
Land vs air — the bit people get wrong
Submit only through ICA — the SG Arrival Card page or the official MyICA app. ICA states SGAC is free. Paid “helper” sites are not ICA.
ICA’s published SG Arrival Card rules (check the live page before you travel) require all travellers to submit SGAC before arriving in Singapore, except:
- people transiting or transferring without seeking immigration clearance; and
- residents — Singapore citizens, Permanent Residents, and Long-Term Pass holders — who enter through Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints.
Long-Term Pass, on ICA’s wording, includes Student’s Pass, Dependant’s Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass, and Work Pass.
Plain language for a Causeway day trip:
- Citizen / PR / long-term pass, returning by Woodlands or Tuas: you are usually not asked to file SGAC for that land re-entry. That is a land-checkpoint resident exception, not “Malaysia trips are always exempt.”
- Same resident, flying into Changi after KL or Malacca: air is a different path. ICA still describes SGAC / health-declaration duties for residents arriving by air or sea. Do not copy your Woodlands habit onto a boarding pass.
- Foreign visitor (including a short-term visit-pass holder who went to JB): assume you do need SGAC before re-entering Singapore, including by land, unless ICA’s page now says otherwise.
ICA’s page has also stated you should submit within three days before arrival, including the day you arrive (their example: arrive 30 June, submit from 28 June). Treat that as published guidance, then verify on the official site before you travel.
SGAC is not a visa. The acknowledgement email does not replace your passport. Foreign visitors on a same-day JB return should complete SGAC on the Singapore-bound side of the trip.
MyICA QR / e-gate at Woodlands & Tuas
ICA has been pushing digital clearance at the checkpoints. For travellers that usually means: install MyICA from the official App Store / Google Play listing, keep a working login, and be ready to show a MyICA QR code if an officer or automated lane asks.
Phone habits that still help when the UI changes
This is not an app-click tutorial. Button names change. Download and prepare the QR the way ICA describes that week. At the hall, follow the officer in front of you.
- Charge the phone before Woodlands or Tuas. A dead battery is not a document.
- Screenshot whatever ICA tells you to keep. Mobile data drops in the building.
- One phone per adult beats four passports and one shared login at the glass.
- If an automated lane rejects the phone, walk to a manned counter. Do not block the queue retrying.
Malaysia e-gate (Singaporeans and others)
Malaysia e-gate Singaporeans is a real search because some Singapore citizens can use automated lanes on the Malaysian side when they meet Immigresen’s conditions that day. That is not a promise attached to every red passport. Children, some first-time visitors, failed biometrics, and anyone an officer pulls aside still go to a counter.
If an e-gate is open and the sign includes you, use it. If not, use the officer. Eligibility is decided on site and on official Immigresen notices — verify before you travel.
What to pack vs what not to bring
What to prepare before crossing the Causeway is half documents, half customs. Duty-free allowances for alcohol and tobacco change. This page will not invent stick counts or millilitres.
Bring these
- Passport pouch you can open standing up
- Phone with MDAC / MyICA / SGAC screenshots already saved
- Power bank and the cable that actually fits
- Prescription medicine in original packaging
- One change of clothes if a jam is possible
- For kids: allowed snacks, wipes, and the child’s own passport
Do not bring
- Drugs, cannabis-adjacent / many vape products. Zero tolerance.
- Weapons, stun devices, replica guns, some knives.
- Undeclared cigarettes and liquor above the current allowance.
- Some fruit, plants, meat, and seeds.
- Large cash without reading both sides’ thresholds.
Customs notes worth reading once
Check Royal Malaysian Customs before you enter Malaysia, and ICA / Singapore Customs before you come home.
If you would not carry it through Changi, do not carry it through Woodlands. Copy of the script if a medicine looks unusual. For kids, keep the child’s own passport in the same pouch as the parent holding them.
If you are not sure, leave it in Singapore. Do not trust a Telegram group’s “we brought it last year.”

The night before (Singapore)
- Open every passport. Passport validity Malaysia: plan on six months; Immigresen is final. Verify on the official site before you travel.
- Split the group by passport nationality, not by who shares the flat. Singapore citizens: confirm you are still MDAC-exempt. Everyone else: assume the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card applies until the official portal says no.
- If MDAC is required, file on the official Immigresen page. Screenshot the confirmation / QR.
- Decide the return mode. Woodlands / Tuas as a Singapore resident: SG Arrival Card is usually not required under ICA’s published land exception. Air return, or foreign visitor by land: prepare SGAC on ICA or MyICA within ICA’s published window. Verify on the official site before you travel.
- Update MyICA. Log in on home Wi-Fi. Confirm you can show a QR if asked.
- Save the Malaysian address you will declare (hotel, family in Skudai, or same-day return).
- Check Royal Malaysian Customs and ICA “what you can bring.” Remove extra cartons and unexplained bottles.
- Charge phones. One power bank. All passports in one zipped pouch.
- Self-driving: handle VEP separately. Not driving: skip VEP.
- Only then pick a slot from the Woodlands / Tuas timing guide.
At the checkpoint (Woodlands or Tuas)
- Phones on; screenshots still open if data dies.
- Same group, same story: together, going to [JB / Legoland / KL], with a return plan.
- Singapore exit: follow ICA signs. Passport and MyICA QR code if the lane or officer asks.
- Malaysian entry: passport out. MDAC QR only if you needed MDAC. Singapore citizens generally skip that card.
- If a Malaysia e-gate is offered and you qualify that day, use it. If not, manned counter.
- Passport back in the pouch before you look for Grab or the bus bay.
- Coming home: residents by land usually skip SGAC; foreign visitors should already have it. Everyone still needs the passport.
If you are taking a private transfer
Buses work. They also mean you carry your own bags through both halls. Once the papers are ready, the remaining pain is a stroller or four suitcases between the Singapore hall and the Malaysian hall.
Stay-in-car does not replace the paperwork
